🇪🇬✨ Egyptian & New in Vancouver?

🇪🇬✨ Egyptian & New in Vancouver?

Ahlan wa sahlan!
You made it to the land of mountains, maple syrup, and public recycling rules that might confuse even Einstein. Whether you’re a student, a family, or a single adventurer—this guide is your starting point.

Here’s what to do, what to pack (and not pack!), and how to feel at home faster than you can say “Tim Hortons double-double.”

What To Do First (Your Top 5 To-Do List)

1. Get Your SIN (Social Insurance Number)

You’ll need this to work or receive any government services. Head to a Service Canada office with your study/work permit and passport.

2. Apply for MSP (Medical Services Plan)

Healthcare in BC isn’t automatic. Apply online for MSP—it takes 3 months to kick in, so arrange private insurance if needed in the meantime.

3. Get a Compass Card

Public transit in Vancouver is safe, reliable, and expensive if you don’t use the Compass Card. Students may qualify for discounts (U-Pass).

4. Open a Bank Account

Banks like RBC, Scotiabank, and TD have newcomer accounts. Bring your passport, visa, and proof of address. Ask about credit cards for newcomers too—it helps build credit!

5. Buy a Warm Jacket—NOW.

Even if it’s sunny when you arrive, Vancouver rain is coming for you ☔. Don’t wait. Invest in a waterproof (not just warm) jacket and sturdy shoes.

🎒 What to Pack from Egypt (Yes, You’ll Miss These)

  • 🇪🇬 Spices & herbs: cumin, molokhia, dukkah, karkadeh
  • Shata (hot sauce): You’ll cry if you forget it
  • Cotton underwear & socks (high quality & cheap in Egypt)
  • Hijabs/scarves: Local options are limited and expensive
  • Small gifts for Canadian hosts or roommates (dates, bookmarks, bracelets – small but cultural!)
  • A few medications like Panadol, cold & flu meds, Voltaren – get a doctor’s note if you’re unsure
  • Power plug adapters (Canada uses 110V, Type A/B plugs)

❌ What NOT to Bring (Trust Us)

  • Too many dressy clothes – Vancouver is super casual (even in offices)
  • Bedding & towels – Easy to buy at Walmart, IKEA, or Dollarama
  • Food in large quantities – Canadian customs can seize it, and you can find halal options here
  • Too much gold – For safety and customs, only bring what you wear
  • Heavy books – Scan them or bring a Kindle instead

🎉 Bonus: First Things That Will Surprise You

  • Everyone says sorry, even when they’re not wrong
  • You’ll miss shaabi music in taxis
  • People line up politely—even for buses
  • Tim Hortons isn’t great coffee (but it’s Canadian tradition)
  • You’ll see so many cats… on leashes 🐱
